TOOL NEEDED:
SCREWDRIVER WITH 1/8" BLADE.
1/8" FLAT END PIN PUNCH
3/16" FLAT END PIN PUNCH
PIECE OF TAPERED WOOD
NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS
HAMMER
VISE

GRASP THE BACK OF THE GUARD FIRMLY SO IT CAN'T EXPAND.
USE THE SCREWDRIVER TO PRY UP THE ROUNDED TAB ON EACH SIDE OF THE LINER. THIS WILL DISTORT THE LINER. BEND THE TABS ENOUGH SO THEY WILL SLIDE THROUGH THE CHANNEL FOR THE LINER.

TABS NOW BENT FOR SLIDING LINER OUT OF HANDGUARD.

GET A PIN PUNCH ABOUT 1/4" DIAMETER AND A HAMMER.
WHILE STILL HOLDING THE HANDGUARD, ALSO HOLD THE PIN PUNCH AGAINST THE BACK OF THE LINER WITH THE SAME HAND.
TAP THE TOP OF THE PUNCH WITH THE HAMMER TO MOVE THE LINER OUT THE FRONT OF THE HANDGUARD.

KEEP TAPPING UNTIL THE LINER IS OUT OF THE HANDGUARD.

TABS ARE NOW BENT.

GRIP THE FIRST BENT SECTION WITH THE PLIERS.
STRAIGHTEN IT SO IT IS IN LINE WITH THE NEXT BEND.
MOVE TO THE NEXT BEND, AND STRAIGHTEN IT SO THE WHOLE SIDE IS STRAIGHT.
WIGGLE EACH SIDE WHILE PRESSING.

LINER TABS NOW STRAIGHT.

TO GET THE NOSEPIECE OFF, INSERT A 1/4" PUNCH IN THE GUARD AGAINST THE TOP INSIDE OF THE NOSEPIECE.
TAP WITH THE HAMMER UNTIL THE NOSEPIECE COMES LOOSE. AT THIS POINT, THE METAL IS OUT OF THE HANDGUARD.

TO PUT THE METAL BACK ON:
PUSH THE NOSEPIECE BACK ON BY HAND.
COVER IT WITH A WOOD BLOCK.
TAP ON THE BLOCK WITH A HAMMER UNTIL THE NOSEPICE IS ALL THE WAY ON.

SLIDE THE HANDGUARD LINER INTO THE GUARD FROM THE FRONT.
TAP THE WOODBLOCK WITH THE HAMMER UNTIL THE LINER IS COMPLETELY INSIDE THE HANDGUARD.

TAP THE 1/8" PUNCH AGAINST THE TABS ON THE FRONT OF THE LINER SO THEY ARE AGAINST THE NOSEPIECE.

LINER IS NOW IN GUARD AS FAR AS IT WILL GO.

NOW TO BEND THE REAR TABS:

GET A PIECE OF TAPERED WOOD 12 INCHES LONG.
SLIDE THIS IN THE UNDERSIDE OF THE LINER UNTIL THERE IS NO GAP BETWEEN THE WOOD AND THE LINER SIDES.
THIS WOULD BE EASIER IF YOU HAD 3 HANDS:
HOLD THE HANDGUARD AND TAPERED WOOD IN 1 HAND, AND THE SMALL SCREWDRIVER IN THE OTHER HAND.
KEEP THE HANDGUARD FROM SPREADING, AND PUSH THE TAB DOWN ABOUT 45 DEGREES.

TAP ON THE PUNCH, WHOSE FLAT END IS RESTING ON 1 OF THE METAL TABS. YOU HAVE TO HOLD THE PUNCH AT AN ANGLE, AND DRIVE THE TAB OVER 90 DEGREES SO IT SO IT CONTACTS THE BACK OF THE GUARD AGAIN.

REPEAT THE PROCESS FOR THE OTHER TAB.

WHEN THE SECOND TAB IS TAPPED 90 DEGREES, THE METAL IS BACK ON THE HANDGUARD.
THIS CONCLUDES THE PROCESS.
I HAVE USED IT ON ABOUT 25 HANDGUARDS.
