M1 Garand restoration- complete or external?

IT TOOK ABOUT 4 YEARS TO RESTORE MY COLLECTION OF 8 RIFLES. THEY BEGAN WITH KOREAN IMPORTS WITH NO PARTS OF THE SAME VINTAGE OR MANUFACTURER AS THE RECEIVERS. AS I DID MORE READING, I FOUND WHICH MANUFACTURER CODES AND REVISION NUMBERS WENT WITH THE RECEIVERS. TRACKING DOWN ALL THE PARTS WAS LIKE A TREASURE HUNT, AND THE FINDING OF EACH NEW PART MADE ME FEEL GOOD. THE ONLY PARTS THAT TOOK SOME TIME WERE THE BARRELS, BUT I EVENTUALLY GOT THEM.

AFTER I GOT ALL THE PARTS, I REFINISHED THE WOOD AND METAL, AND ASSEMBLED THE RIFLES. ALL WENT TOGETHER EASILY EXCEPT THE WINCHESTER. I FOUND THAT THEY WERE A VOLUME MANUFACTURER OF CUSTOM MADE RIFLES. THE RECEIVER WOULD NOT FIT IN THE WRENCH, THE BARREL DID NOT FIT INTO THE RECEIVER CORRECTLY, THE GAS CYLINDER DID NOT FIT ONTO THE BARREL, AND THE SCREW DID NOT FIT INTO THE GAS CYLINDER. I HAD TO DO SOME SANDING, FILING, AND GRINDING TO GET THE PARTS TO FIT. THIS IS WHAT WINCHESTER WAS CRITICIZED FOR IN THE FITTING TESTS OF PARTS BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT M1 CARBINE MANUFACTURERS.

SO ALL THE RIFLES WERE COMPLETE AND LOOKING GOOD. SOMETHING HAPPENED WHICH I DID NOT EXPECT. I BEGAN TO GET THE IDEA THAT THE RIFLES WERE NOW IN TOO GOOD SHAPE TO SHOOT. I DID NOT WANT TO WEAR OUT ANY OF THE PARTS THAT I HAD SEARCHED SO DILIGENTLY FOR. I DID NOT FEEL LIKE LOOKING FOR REPLACEMENT PARTS THAT I WOULD NEED IF THE RIFLES MALFUNCTIONED.

HERE IS AN IDEA FOR AN ORIGINAL LOOKING RIFLE WHICH YOU COULD ALSO SHOOT WITHOUT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT WEARING OUT SCARCE PARTS: GET ALL THE ORIGINAL PARTS FOR THE SERIAL NUMBER THAT YOU CAN SEE WHEN THE RIFLE IS ASSEMBLED, AND GET GENERIC UNMARKED PARTS WHICH YOU CANNOT SEE. WHEN THE RIFLE IS COMPLETE; YOU CANNOT SEE THAT BARREL DATE, OP ROD NUMBER, TRIGGER HOUSING, SAFETY, HAMMER, ETC. GET ONLY THE PARTS LIKE THE SIGHT KNOBS, GAS CYLINDER, METAL PARTS FOR THE STOCK, AND FRONT SIGHT. BY DOING THIS, YOU CAN USE A NEW BARREL AND OP ROD WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT WEARING THEM OUT, AND STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL WW2 LOOK THAT REBUILT RIFLES DON'T HAVE.

AFTER DOING THIS SO YOU HAVE 1 RIFLE YOU CAN SHOOT, DO ONE WITH ALL ORIGINAL PARTS. THEN YOU CAN SEE HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT SHOOTING EITHER. IF YOU STILL HAVE THE BUG, YOU CAN RESTORE MORE RIFLES WITH ALL ORIGINAL PARTS, BUT ONLY SHOOT THEM ONCE A YEAR.
