M1 GARAND HANDGUARDS AND BUTT PLATE REMOVAL


TOOLS NEEDED:
HAMMER
SCREWDRIVER WITH SQUARE SHAFT
PIN PUNCHES
DRILL BIT
WRENCH
VISE (BOLT TO WORK BENCH)
WOODEN BLOCKS

UNHOOK THE TRIGGER GUARD.

PULL THE TRIGGER GUARD AS FAR FORWARD AS IT WILL GO, COCKING THE HAMMER.

PULL THE TRIGGER GROUP AND RECEIVER GROUP OUT OF THE STOCK

TRY TO UNSCREW THE GAS CYLINDER SCREW.

IF IT LOOSENS, SKIP THE NEXT 3 STEPS.

BOLT THE VISE TO THE WORK BENCH.
PUT THE WOOD BLOCKS IN.

PUT THE RECEIVER IN THE VISE AND TIGHTEN THE JAWS.

INSERT THE SCREWDRIVER IN THE GAS CYLINDER SCREW.
PUT THE WRENCH ON THE SCREWDRIVER, AND GIVE IT A GOOD PUSH.
THIS SHOULD LOOSEN THE SCREW.

UNSCREW THE GAS CYLINDER LOCK.

USE THE HAMMER AND WOOD BLOCK TO TAP ON THE BACK OF THE FRONT SIGHT, DRIVING THE GAS CYLINDER OFF THE BARREL.

USE THE HAMMER AND PIN PUNCH TO DRIVE OUT THE PIN HOLDING THE LOWER BAND.

PULL THE FRONT HAND GUARD OUT OF THE LOWER BAND.

UNHOOK AND REMOVE THE OPERATING ROD.

USE THE HAMMER AND BLOCK TO TAP THE LOWER BAND OFF THE BARREL.

SUPPORT FOR THE MUZZLE.

REAR HANDGUARD REMOVAL:
PUT THE DRILL BIT IN THE HOLE IN THE HANDGUARD CLIP.
PRESS AGAINST THE BIT WITH YOUR THUMB.
THIS WILL UNLATCH THE CLIP FROM THE BARREL SLOT.

PUSH THE HAND GUARD UP AND OFF THE BARREL.

THE HAND GUARDS ARE NOW OFF THE BARREL.

REMOVE THE BUTT PLATE SCREWS.
IF THEY ARE TIGHT:
PUT STOCK IN VISE WITH WOOD BLOCKS
SUPPORT FRONT OF STOCK WITH YOUR FOOT.
PUT WRENCH ON SCREWDRIVER.
PRESS ON SCREWDRIVER.
PULL WRENCH TOWARD YOU.

REMOVE SLING SWIVEL:
IF IT WON'T PULL OUT:
FOLD UP SANDPAPER 8 TIMES TO MAKE A CUSHION.
PUT SCREWDRIVER THROUGH SWIVEL AND REST ON SANDPAPER.
PULL UP ON SCREWDRIVER, AND SWIVEL SHOULD COME OUT.

WHEN RE-ASSEMBLING, GET A PIECE OF TELEPHONE DIRECTORY COVER. IT IS .01" THICK.
IF IT WON'T SLIDE BETWEEN THE RECEIVER AND REAR HAND GUARD, SAND THE BACK OF THE GUARD UNTIL THE COVER WILL SLIDE.
THIS HELPS TO PREVENTS VERTICAL STRINGING OF SHOTS.

USE THE PIECE OF COVER TO CHECK THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE GAS CYLINDER AND FRONT HAND GUARD. IF THE COVER WON'T SLIDE THROUGH THE GAP, TAP THE GAS CYLINDER FORWARD UNTIL THERE IS CLEARANCE. YOU MAY HAVE TO PUT THE LOCK ON 1 LESS TURN.
THIS ALSO HELPS TO PREVENT VERTICAL STRINGING OF SHOTS AS THE BARREL HEATS UP.
